Not just any Shop Manager Job Description & Requirements
Looking for an outdoor enthusiast that is personable, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about an array of gear. Preferably you fly fish, kayak, hike, climb, cave or backpack and even have the knowledge to help arborist and roofers find safe solutions to rigging issues while still being able to smile and fit grandma in a pair of comfy shoes and college kids into a trendy pullover. You’ll be a good problem solver and team player as a lot of your weekdays are spent working along side me, the shop owner. Together we will write orders, receive inventory, merchandise, market and consult on most business operations. You will make sure special orders are placed in a timely fashion, provide formal quotes for organizations, manage other staff and work along side the bike shop manager on clinics and events. Sometimes we do random projects that require tools, paint and imagination
My shop is in Cookeville, TN. Cookeville is a micropolitan university town, which is growing by the day. It has been known and recognized for its low cost of living, although the real estate market is currently booming. Population of 40k, we are the hub to the Upper Cumberland region seeing 100K plus pass through daily (the town, not the shop that is) We have 10 state parks within an hours drive , waterfalls and more waterfalls, rivers to paddle and fish, trails to hike, art to look at, microbrews to visit, local eateries, beautiful country roads to ride bikes on and a growing mtn bike scene. Folks are friendly and many are very supportive of the local economy.
I have always sought out reputable brands that I personally stand behind and staff that, not only, believe in and use the products we offer but also share the same values as myself. However, no matter how good our product is, our biggest competitor is the Internet and it is pertinent that we provide exceptional customer service. Period. I enjoy coming to work everyday and it’s important to me that my staff feels the same way. I am extremely fortunate to have been able to make a living doing something I love, and provide a living for like-minded folks. Success comes in so may different packages and while a necessity to almost all of us, money isn’t my #1 priority and has never been the reason I am in the outdoor industry.
Although I employ 13 people only 4 of us are full-time. Two are in the bike shop and two (you and I) are in the outdoor shop. During busier times we have part time college students with us in the afternoons, and they or some of our long-time-already-graduated and have a career-but-cant-let-go-staff work the weekends. We have another fella that works from home entering PO’s, processing invoices and keeping us stocked with supplies.
We keep our kayaks on the upper level and carrying them up and down isn’t fun but it’s what we do. You’d need to be ok with both lifting; carrying and assisting customers load boats for transportation.
Salary is 35K-45K depending on experience with both growth and potential entrepreneur opportunities. At least 2 paid weeks off a year, Simple IRA match plan, yearly contribution to an HSA.
Does this sound like you? If so, lets connect as I look forward to hearing more about you.
