Lead Bicycle Technician Job Description & Requirements

Lead Technician

The Lead Technician will be primarily responsible for the completion of service tickets as they arise and for the sourcing of service related parts and materials. They will be the primary technician for all advanced problems: electric diagnosis, suspension service, wheel building, etc. This individual will help dictate the workflow of the service department, order necessary parts and materials and ensure that work orders are completed correctly and on time. The hope for this role is for them to move into a newly created Service Manager position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide business insight to ED when appropriate

  • Hire / Train / Empower employees

  • Inform employees of new policies & procedures

  • Assist in maintaining organized inventory

  • Assist in performing occasional inventory counts

  • Provide customer service over the phone

  • Maintain cleanliness / order of shop floor

  • Maintain high sales ability

  • Check work email at beginning / end of shift 

  • Provide team with week-end email summarizing open items

  • Set priority for work orders

  • Delegate rental fleet related responsibilities

  • Delegate mechanic shop related responsibilities

  • Assist in scheduling shop staff

  • Perform repairs on customer bikes

  • Maintain rental fleet

  • Build new bikes for retail 

  • Maintain stock levels / place orders for mech shop consumables

  • Handle warranty items for retail bikes

  • Handle warranty items for rental bikes

  • Assist in handling warranty items for accessories

  • Work with / train interns

  • Act as mentor for job trainees

  • Assist in generating blog posts for GTC website

  • Assist in staffing local events

Education/Experience: 

  • 3-5 years experience in bicycle mechanics

  • 2 years experience servicing Suntour, Rockshox & Fox suspension components

  • 1-2 years diagnosing eBike specific problems

  • Experience managing people a PLUS

  • Project management experience a PLUS

  • PBMA Level 2 Technician - PLUS

Physical Demands:

  • Able to sit or stand and walk throughout the scheduled work shift

  • Must be able to ride a bike

  • Able to lift and/or move up to 70 lbs

Typical Working Days / Hours:

  • 8 hrs/day

  • 5 days/wk

  • Working most weekend days

  • Pay range $20-$24/hr

GoodTurn Cycles is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated helping people achieve better health and providing job training to young people. Our shop specializes in sales, rentals and tours of electric bicycles (e-bikes), and repairs for all bikes.

GoodTurn Cycles is home to a job training program for young people with barriers to employment. Our paid internship program takes our interns through a bicycle mechanics, customer service and mentorship curriculum in which we develop transferrable basic employability skills. Although we have dedicated staff to perform the training, all employees have the opportunity to have a positive impact on our interns through mentor engagement and supplementary training.
